Basic Info
Name:Fern Magnussen
Location:London, United Kingdom
Website:Fiery Inception
Bio
The Basics

Character Name: Fern Magnussen
PB: Doutzen Kroes

Age: 25
Birthday: 30 May, 1975
Wand: 10” Hawthorn with a centaur bone core
House in School: Hufflepuff
Bloodline: Half-blood

Political View: Fern is a firm believer that all men are created equal. She doesn’t believe that the “purity” of anybody’s blood makes them better than anyone else, or gives them license to rule.

During the second war, she aligned herself with the Order of the Phoenix, aiding them in any way she could. Now that the war is over, she assumes a generally conservative stance now that everyday life is just as much of a challenge.
Appearance

Height: 5’ 4”
Weight: 115lbs
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Dirty strawberry blonde
Build: Petite
Dress Style: Fern has a very eclectic style of dress, perhaps even a little “funky”. Her wardrobe contains a mix of both traditional wizard robes and attire blended amongst muggle items. She tends to wear layers and has a rather formidable collection of sweaters. She can most commonly be seen in jeans and a tanktop or shirt which are usually hidden under a sweater (save for the sparse summery weather). Fern also has a soft spot for girlish and frilly items even though they don’t always make it into her daily wear.

Basic Physical Description: Fern possesses a very amiable visage. She is on the shorter side of “average”, thin (not overly muscular and a bit soft), and keeps herself well. Her hair is long and wavy, and always manages to fall in her face despite any charms she may employ. Her most distinguishable features are her eyes (which her father has always said contain more blue than the seas), and her lips. She requires reading glasses which always seem to get lost.

Defining Marks: She has a few scars and injuries left from her service to the Order. Though the one across her stomach is, to her, particularly ghastly, she doesn’t regret any course of action that lead her to acquire it.

Fern has a series of runic symbols tattooed across her back, believing in the blessings they bestow upon her. The symbols include Üruz, Algiz, and Jera. The symbol Üruz was selected to inspire strength and courage, Algiz for protection and trust, and finally Jera to foster growth and maturity.
Personality

Fern is a very lively person, talkative and energetic. Though, I’m sure many might use the term “annoying”. She is fiercely loyal to those she deems precious to her. She tends to make friends fairly easily, muggle and wizard alike. As a byproduct of many deaths so early in her life, she likes to keep people close to her.

Occasionally her happy-go-lucky attitude can fail her, allowing a sour mood to strike. They’re rather recognizable by her complete absence of talking all together. Like her father, she also can be over protective of her closest friends. She can be a little too eager to help and complicate things further, not so unlike when she tries to help Seamus in those occasional bar fights.

Fern loves history, muggle and wizarding alike. She greatly enjoys engaging some of the older clientele in conversations which sometimes leads to her dereliction of duties. One of her favorite hobbies, and most annoying to date, is to challenge people’s ideas and opinions by way of simple, and sometimes asinine, questions. She believes that one can often learn more about a person in their response to the simplest questions than a lifetime of study.
Psychology

Extrovert/Introvert: Extrovert. She is very active, and often times loquacious. She has no reservation in telling a person exactly what she is thinking.
Boggart Would Be: Her father’s headstone. Fern has lost many people fairly early in her life. Her father is the only family that remains, and losing him would destroy her completely.
Patronus Would Be: Fern’s protector is that of a hawk. In many cultures, the hawk symbolizes guardianship and knowledge, and is a messenger. All of these things holds a particular importance in her life; She fiercely guards those dearest to her; She takes every opportunity to learn something new, every day; She was very faithfully a messenger to the Order during the war.
Sexuality

Fern is straight. She loves to flirt with boys, bat her eyelashes, and occasionally be doted upon. She had a few fleeting romances during her time at Hogwarts, but her first serious relationship was after graduation, and ended abruptly as their opinions of blood became more polarized with the growing war.
Lifestyle

Occupation: Waitress at the Leaky Cauldron
Residence: A small apartment at the Leaky Cauldron, overlooking Charing Cross Road.
Financial Status: Fern doesn’t have any particularly mentionable wealth, but she makes ends meet, sometimes with a little to spare.
Family

Parents: David and Eleanor (deceased) Magnussen
Siblings: none

Fern’s family is a very small one and, therefore, very important. Her mother died just after her fourth birthday. Though she has a few memories - nothing more than blurry moments in time - her absence haunted many of Fern’s youngest years. It was her death (which is still something of a mystery to Fern) that facilitated her father’s action in concealing that part of her heritage.

Growing up, Fern and her father were two peas in a pod. Fern worshipped her father, and he kept her close, a fear that she’d be lost the moment he let her go residing in his subconscious. It was also that fear that drove Davey to raise his daughter as a muggle. He was the one to teach her never to frown, to ask questions, to cherish all life, and to give. It was when she discovered she was a witch that caused the first bit of strife in his relationship. Though it didn’t last through her first year of Hogwarts, there still remained a hesitation between them. Still, they are close, and visit each other whenever able.

Fern’s grandparents on her mother’s side were unknown to her until the arrival of her Hogwarts letter. Upon searching for any family her mother may have had she stumbled upon a box of their letters to her that her father kept hidden. She attempted to visit them multiple times on her own before her father took her for their first meeting since she was a young child. They traded constant letters and were summertime tutors until their death just before her graduation.
History from student days at Hogwarts to the present time

The invitation to join Hogwarts, for Fern, was an invitation to a new world, both exciting and stressful. Though they both knew that Fern was a witch (a fact that was hardly deniable after turning her father blue at the age of three), her father had taken great care in keeping the world her mother had been a part of out of his and Ferns, fearful that she would find the same fate as his beloved wife. An owl delivering an invitation to a wizarding school made it rather difficult. Throughout the summer, Fern battled with her father, begging him to let her attend the school, and attempting to discover as much about the world as possible. After the third attempt to find her own means of travel across the Scottish highlands to visit her wizard grandparents, her father relented and in September of 1987 she began her school career at Hogwarts.

Fern’s first year at Hogwarts was rather rough and her marks were rather poor. But by her second year a prominent talent in charms had begun to develop, and her marks across the board began to rise, especially in the subjects of runes and defense against the dark arts. Though she earned good marks throughout school, she was never an exemplary student.

Graduating with satisfactory OWLS and NEWTS she went to work as an assistant to a worker in London’s branch of Gringotts. Though not a glorious job, she learned quite a bit from her boss and was given leeway to attend to her independent study of history and runes. Fern left her job to join the Order of the Phoenix in the fall of 1997, shortly after the death of Dumbledore. The sad news of his death brought more than sadness to Fern-- It was the first time she had ever felt truly unsafe, like Voldemort just might win. It was the final step in her decision to join the Order.

Originally she served as a gopher, of sorts, to the Order, digging up information and anything else they required of her. She never reached any honorable ranks, but she wasn’t looking for one. Her purpose was to end the prejudice between the wizards.

After a rather hazardous run-in with a Death Eater which left her with the scar across her midsection (and a few days in St Mungos, of course), she came across her current post at the Leaky Cauldron working with Seamus. She gathered what information she could and passed it along directly to Seamus. And, of course, she fought rather proudly in the final battle. During the war she built a friendship with Seamus which carries on today and is of particular importance to her. It remains one of the reasons she continued on at the Leaky Cauldron.

The end of the war brought about just as many challenges as the war itself. After such a consuming war, they were all returned to a world turned upside down. Her service earned her pardon from the registry, but such a fortune did not include many good people. Though she didn’t participate in the protests that were happening, she joined in the many that began to foster malcontent for the ministry in silence. The dislike only deepened when Snape was released-- Since she learned the news of Dumbledore’s death by his hands, all respect for her former professor was lost. She tries to avoid him at all costs, firmly believing that the murder of a man is unforgivable. Her hate for the ministry turned somewhat to fear when Bellatrix also was released. Fools, all of them…
